MONTEPRANDONE
(5Km from San Benedetto del Tronto)
Monteprandone rises on a hill at 280 metres a.s.l. about
5 Km. from San Benedetto del Tronto and offers a lovely
view of the sea and surrounding mountains. It is the
hometown of S. Giacomo della Marca (1393-1476) and of
the artist Carlo Allegretti (16-17th century). The ancient
town walls and streets are intact inside the historic
town centre amongst its green pine trees. The town hall
houses part of the precious library of S. Giacomo with
its original codices some of which containing miniature
paintings. The collegiate church of S. Nicolò
has a wooden 13th century crucifix. At 1,5 Km. from
the town's historic centre you can find the convent
of S. Maria delle Grazie or S. Giacomo della Marca.
The hills are covered in rich vineyards which yield
the famous controlled denomination of origin wines such
as "Rosso Piceno Superiore" and "Bianco
Falerio del Colli Ascolani". A short stop-over
or a holiday at Monteprandone will give you the chance
to taste simple, genuine food such as: ham, salami,
liver with eggs, pecorino cheese, homemade pasta with
duck sauce, rabbit ('ncip-'nciap), mutton kebabs, lambs
ribs and much more
